چکیده

X-ray observations have revealed in other galaxies a class of extra-nuclear X-ray point sources with X-ray luminosities of 10–10 erg/sec, exceeding the Eddington luminosity for stellar mass X-ray binaries. These ultra-luminous Xray sources (ULXs) may be powered by intermediate mass black hole of a few thousand M⊙ or stellar mass black holes with special radiation processes. In this paper, we present a survey of ULXs in 313 nearby galaxies with D25>1 ′ within 40 Mpc with 467 ROSAT HRI archival observations. The HRI observations are reduced with uniform procedures, refined by simulations that help define the point source detection algorithm employed in this survey. A sample of 562 extragalactic X-ray point sources with LX = 10 –10 erg/sec is extracted from 173 survey galaxies, including 106 ULX candidates within the D25 isophotes of 63 galaxies and 110 ULX candidates between 1–2×D25 of 64 galaxies, from which a clean sample of 109 ULXs is constructed to minimize the contamination from foreground or background objects. The strong connection between ULXs and star formation is confirmed based on the striking preference of ULXs to occur in late-type galaxies, especially in star forming regions such as spiral arms. ULXs are variable on time scales over days to years, and exhibit a variety of long term variability patterns. The identifications of ULXs in the clean sample show some ULXs identified as supernovae (remnants), HII regions/nebulae, or young massive stars in star forming regions, and a few other ULXs identified as old globular clusters. In a subsequent paper, the statistic properties of the survey will be studied to calculate the occurrence frequencies and luminosity functions for ULXs in different types of galaxies to shed light on the nature of these enigmatic sources. Ultra-luminous X-ray Sources in Nearby Galaxies from Rosat Hri Observations Ii. Statistical Properties

The statistical properties of the ultra-luminous X-ray source (ULX) populations extracted from the ROSAT HRI survey of X-ray point sources in nearby galaxies in Paper I are studied to reveal connections between the ULX phenomenon and survey galaxy properties. The logN–logS relation is used to calculate and remove the influence of false ULXs from the background and/or foreground objects. Study o...

A ROSAT HRI survey of bright nearby galaxies

We use the extensive public archive of ROSAT High Resolution Imager (HRI) observations to carry out a statistical investigation of the X-ray properties of nearby galaxies. Specifically we focus on the sample of 486 bright (BT ≤ 12.5) northern galaxies studied by Ho, Filippenko and Sargent (HFS) in the context of their exploration of the optical spectroscopic properties of nearby galactic nuclei...

Multiwavelength study of the nuclei of a volume-limited sample of galaxies I: X-ray observations

We discuss ROSAT HRI X-ray observations of 33 very nearby galaxies, sensitive to X-ray sources down to a luminosity of approximately 10 erg s. The galaxies are selected from a complete, volume limited sample of 46 galaxies with d < 7 Mpc for which we have extensive multi-wavelength data. For an almost complete sub-sample with MB < −14 (29/31 objects) we have HRI images. Contour maps and source ...

Compact X-ray Sources in Nearby Galaxy Nuclei

We have found compact, near-nuclear X-ray sources in 21 (54%) of a complete sample of 39 nearby face-on spiral and elliptical galaxies with available ROSAT HRI data. ROSAT X-ray luminosities (0.2 − 2.4 keV) of these compact X-ray sources are ∼10−10 erg s. The mean displacement between the location of the compact X-ray source and the optical photometric center of the galaxy is ∼390 pc. ASCA spec...

ROSAT observations of the dwarf starforming galaxy Holmberg II ( UGC 4305 )

We present ROSAT PSPC and HRI observations of the dwarf irregular galaxy Holm-berg II (UGC4305). This is one of the most luminous dwarf galaxies (L x ∼ 10 40 erg s −1) detected in the ROSAT All-Sky Survey. The X-ray emission comes from a single unresolved point source, coincident with a large HII region which emits intense radio emission. The source is variable on both year and day timescales, ...
